The Lands at Hillside Farm Riparian Zone Restoration Project

PEC is conducting an invasive species removal and tree planting project along the banks of the Huntsville Creek as the creek flows through the Lands at Hillside Farm located in Luzerne County.
Background:
In 2006 and 2007, PEC prepared a Rivers Conservation Plan for the Greater Wyoming Valley Watershed located in Luzerne County.  Stream bank erosion was identified as a major issue in the watershed.  PEC in partnership with the Lands at Hillside Farm developed an implementation project at the farm that would in part address the stream bank erosion issues along the banks of Huntsville Creek as it flows through the farm.

Major milestones/successes to date:
Japanese Knotweed and other invasive plant species were sprayed in the fall of 2007 along sections of Huntsville Creek as it flows through The Lands at Hillside Farms. in areas near Huntsville Creek that lack invasive species.  14 trees that are 10 feet or more in height were planted by local volunteers, PEC staff and Lands at Hillside staff in November 2007.
Current/upcoming plans:
Tree planting activities will continue in the spring of 2008 in areas along the creek that currently lack invasive species.  The trees that will be planted this spring will be 2 to 3 feet in height and will be planted though volunteer efforts coordinated by PEC.

The Japanese Knotweed and other invasive plant species will be sprayed again in the spring/summer of 2008 with the anticipation that these areas will be re-planted with native species in the fall of 2008 or spring of 2009.
