Song honors opening of trout season
With the first day of trout season upon us, it is appropriate that PEC continues its periodic music features by offering "The Whole Day Fishing" for your listening enjoyment.
This song was written by Rick Bruening, who says the song is about growing up on the Raystown branch of the Juniata River in Bedford County. The sometimes whimsical lyrics take people on a daydream down the river with Rick with a little dose of reality in his lament about inappropriate development that in some spots is troublesome along our scenic river corridors.
"I grew up listening to Pete Womback on the radio always saying, ‘It's a Beautiful Day in Pennsylvania,' Rick says. "Today, that is often how I greet people or begin one of my shows."
He says he originally wrote the song for an NPR radio show, but never followed up on it. We found it on a compilation of songs put out by the "Pittsburgh Songwriters Circle".
His roots along the Juniata still run deep - no pun intended - as he notes his propensity to gather aluminum cans from the roadways of our state.
Rick now lives in New Wilmington, about 60 miles north of Pittsburgh, where the Annual Trout Stocking is a huge event and a tradition for his sons.
Speaking of PEC, he adds, "It is a compliment to be connected to an organization whose efforts are striving to keep Pennsylvania such a beautiful state."
