Illegal dump site cleanup press conference

The Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC) is hosting a press conference for the cleanup of an illegal dumpsite that was located on Alden Mountain, Newport Township - Luzerne County.

Due to steep terrain of the site, a contractor was retained to remove the 91. 77 Tons of Trash and 3 Tons of Scrap Metal that was illegally dumped. Funding was provided to the Pennsylvania Environmental Council to cleanup this site from Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and United States Department of Agriculture.

Additional cleanups were also held, including contractor and volunteer cleanups in the Newport Township area in the month of November, 2009, resulting in 24.28 tons of trash, 32.38 tons of scrap metal and 5.62 tons of tires being removed from several locations.

Mascaro & Sons, Keystone Sanitary Landfill, Mericle Commercial Real Estate Services, Pennsylvania American Water Company, Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and United States Department of Agriculture.

DIRECTIONS: South on I-81. Take exit 164 toward US-11/Nanticoke (PA-29N/South Cross Valley Expressway). Take Exit 2 towards Alden. Turn Left onto S. Main Street. S. Main Street becomes Middle Road. Middle Road becomes E. Kirmar Ave. Turn Left onto Alden Mountain Road. Travel approximately 1 - 1.5 miles up Alden Mountain Road. Cleanup took place on the right near the UGI power lines.
