Environmental protections built into natural gas drilling legislation that passed the state Senate on Tuesday convinced some environmental groups to endorse the bill with reservations even as others rejected it wholesale as a giveaway to the gas industry.

The environmental rules were often overshadowed in recent months by sparring over the bill's more controversial impact fee and local zoning provisions.
